Personal hospitality

Seasoned travelers through Eastern Europe will sure concur, that the stark difference between personal and professional hospitality was striking, but a lot changed…!
Culinary

From the very beginning it has been our wish and mission to dedicate as much time and effort in embracing the local community as best as we can and to contribute to forming a new future for the village we now call home. For me personally, the experience in a restaurant is not only defined by the quality of food and wine, but also very much so be the atmosphere and - extremely important - the service.

As the Valea Verde Restaurant by Jonas Schäfer is situated in the tiny Transylvanian Village of Cund, this utterly remote setting at the end of an asphalted road between the rolling hills and lush forests has its own particular challenges - mainly finding qualified local staff.

In the face of this challenge, we decided in 2007 to employ ONLY locals from Cund, or nowadays also the neighboring village. This trend turned out to be one of the best decisions we have ever made ;-)The seasoned traveler, who has been to Eastern Europe in the last 30 years may remember the stark difference between professional and personal hospitality - especially in the first decades after 1989.Restaurant staff was often not very customer orientated and making guests feel “welcome and cared for” was sadly not always the focus.

At the same time, whenever someone had the opportunity to visit a Romanian household, he was sure to be welcomed with open arms, families shared all they had and you often left as friends!Based on this experience, we talked to our team members to please treat the guests coming to the restaurant with the honest, heartfelt and warm hospitality we received so many times when visiting people in their homes. Even though nearly all, mainly younger colleagues of ours, were initially reluctant to interact with what they perceived as town folks or foreign, it soon became clear that the disarming charm of honest hospitality works!

Professional trainings

Since then we have done many professional training sessions with seasoned industry experts about table service as well as with award winning sommelier Zoltan Szabo on the world of wine and service. As a result, we now pride ourselves as having a great team of local, very caring and loyal waitresses and waiters and hosts…

However, we constantly strive to better our services, maintain and develop our own authentic service identity befitting our rural location and are looking forward to welcoming and hosting you someday soon!

Conclusion

Seasoned travelers through Eastern Europe will sure concur, that the stark difference between personal and professional hospitality was striking, but a lot changed…!
